His name means wholeheartedness and he was certainly that – Trusting and having faith in God even though the circumstances going into the Promised Land looked impossible (again!).

He remembered that this was the same God that had brought them over the Red Sea and dealt with the hoards of Egyptian soldiers following them – the God of the impossible situation!

	Questions:

	1. What can we learn from Caleb about heart attitude and what made him “Different?”

	2. Do we ‘fully rely on God’ (FROG) or are we more of a ‘partly rely on God’ person (PROG) – if we are why?

	3. God says that his burden is light – why does it most of the time feel heavy? How do we find our song in the dark times?

	4. God wants us to be honest with him and others and yet we find that hard – why is that?</itunes:summary>

    <itunes:summary>Peter spoke about “Daddy God”.

[Please see the links below for the video that Peter showed at the beginning of his preach and the table that he showed.]

“Our society has dictated that we are oppressed, fatherless families.” (Phil Hardy) No father is one poverty people have.

“To become a father is very easy. To be a father is another matter” Gavin Northcote

	• Only 10% of people in our nation have positive fatherhood roles.
• 75% of people on housing estates have no father.
• 15% of children born have no father at that time
• Father is used 100 times in the book of John.

Mark Stibbe: “God is the solution to the fatherless generation”

Matt 18v2-3 “And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.””

	• Children ask for whatever they want. Matthew and the Aston Martin. Menus in restaurants.
• Children know parents are in control, and can solve any problem. Any sign of trouble and a child looks round for their parent and slips their hand into their patents. Teenagers start to realise this isn’t true! But Jesus did not command us to be like teenagers!
• Children don’t worry about tomorrow, or what they will wear. Or eat. They don’t plan.

	Close eyes, listen. Who wants?

Matt 6 Do Not Be Anxious
25”Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31Therefore do not be anxious, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” 32For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34”Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Who doesn’t lie awake at night plotting to solve their issues?

This follows right on from the Lord’s prayer. “Our Father”.
• Fathers will give us the desires of our heart.
• They are loving and to be cuddled.
• Fathers are to be respected and obeyed.
• Jesus knew His Father’s character when he addressed Him in this way.

Luke18:15-17 Let the Children Come to Me
Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”

Reliance on God, total submission. Not reliance on self.

Children have full access to the fridge. our babysitters do too, but they don’t…..

C H Spurgeon: “One work of the Holy Spirit is to create in believers the spirit of adoption….. We are regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and so receive nature of children; and that nature, which is given by him, he continually prompts, and excites, and develops, and matures; so that we receive day by day more and more of the child-like spirit.”</itunes:summary>

We are regenerated by the Holy Spirit, and so receive nature of children; and that nature, which is given by him, he continually prompts, and excites, and develops, and matures; so that we receive day by day more and more of the child-like spirit.”

<table width=95% border="1" cellspacing="0 cellpadding="0">

SERVANT

CHILD

THEOLOGY

God is Master

God as Father

IMAGE OF GOD

Punative

Affectionate

STATUS

Slave

Son

SPIRITUALITY

Fear

Love

UNDERSTANDING

Ignorance

Knowledge

CONDITION

Bondage

Freedom

GOD’S PRESENCE

Remote

Intimate

[Use the links below to view a larger PDF version of this table.]

1Cor 13:11 “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”

We need to be childlike, not childish.

Why does being a child of God help our mission?
• Wayne Parsons: “If God is fathering us, we will father others.”
• When we understand the Fatherhood of God, we can understand His heart for us, His children.
• When we learn to be more childlike, we will understand more the character of our Father.

Isa55 Grandad

Ps146v7 “Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free;”

Questions

1. Do you wake in the early morning? And what preoccupies you?
2. How was your experience of an earthly father? Do you have any problems as regards relating to God as a father?
3. How does this affect your mission?

Phil continued his message from Isaiah 58, speaking from Isaiah 58 v6-14

Phil looked at the yoke of oppression that Jesus came to free people from. He looked at the oppression that can be on the individual, in a community (Society) and on a nation.

Jesus came to break the yoke of oppression and part of our mission as the church is to do the same through our social action.

Please see notes and power point attached.

	Questions

. What oppression are we aware of in our communities, if any?

. How can we affect the community to bring change?

. If you could do anything what would it be? (What’s in your heart to do?)</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Dave spoke about our mission statement, what we are here for, what is our purpose, why we exist. This is the statement: ‘We exist to worship God and encounter his presence, committed to advancing his Kingdom through local church communities caught up in mission both here and to the nations’.

Worship… Church… Mission… are the essential ingredients. We are to value all 3 but if we miss the mission focus out of either worship or church we end up existing for ourselves and not those Jesus came to save. His mission statement is in Luke 19:10 “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost”. Mission must take centre stage.

Practical applications: To receive in worship is missional because we can only give away what we freely receive Matt 10:8. The song about ‘running into his arms of grace’ then experiencing his presence was great in itself but was also fuel for mission; the use of tongues in a public meeting should be controlled because it causes a problem for the unbelieving visitor 1 Cor 14:23 unless it is the gift of public tongues with interpretation; we are the aroma of Christ 2 Cor 2:14-15 and spread him around wherever we go.

Learn how to start a conversation – Ask questions and be willing to be self disclosing! We should engage with people and begin to build relationship bridges, follow the promptings of the Spirit and walk across the room! Bill Hybels book with this title is very helpful and practical on this matter of taking the risk of approaching someone new

Finally be open to the Spirit, he is a missionary Spirit and Jesus said we would receive power from him to be witnesses / tell of what we know Acts 1:8

Gill shared about the joy of working together in a team on Alpha so all our gifts get used. Also the sense of God’s preparation for mission that has been going on these last 2 years, so we ended by praying for the on-going filling and anointing with the Holy Spirit for mission

	QUESTIONS

Do you find the idea of being a church on mission exciting, frightening, challenging or what?

Not everybody is an evangelist, in what ways can you be missional?

Read Bill Hybel’s extract from ‘Just Walk Across the Room’ (use link below) called Seed Sowing Fools. He ask this question:’Do you really believe that someday the seed you sow will fall on the right soil and produce fruit?. Why or why not?”

How would taking Christ at his word that you will produce fruit encourage you to get engaged in the work of evangelism?</itunes:summary>

John the Baptist is in prison and the central question is what kind of Kingdom was Jesus proclaiming when he said the Kingom of heaven is here? John expected a nationalistic rule to come with the overthrow of the Romans but Jesus defined the Kingdom he was bringing by the things he did, see v5. Jesus’ deeds did not match John’s expectations

Jesus brings a mild rebuke to John “Blessed is he who is not offended by me” . It is a blessed state to be at one with Jesus and it brings all the benefits of peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

To be in the kingdom is be greater than John the Baptist! V11. Yet there is a violence and struggle with the advance of God’s kingdom (v12). So jesus begins in chapter 10 to outline some of the costs of following him such as being rejected and maligned (10:25) and experiencing a divided family (10:35-37). We must go through these things unoffended by Jesus and then we will be found worthy of him (10:38).

Finally, if people want to reject Jesus because their hearts are hard, they will! (v16-19) Every argument will be rejected. We are not to be put off but keep scattering the seed of the good news of the Kingdom and praying for those in need that the Kingdom will break into their situation. Even a small act of kindness will bring its reward (10:42).

	QUESTIONS

How did Jesus answer John’s question of whether he was the one who would bring the Kingdom of God into this world?

If Jesus does not meet our expectations of what he should do, are we tempted to be offended by him?

We may be offended because of some of the costs of following Jesus and being in his kingdom. Eg Matt 10:25 or Matt10:35-37. What does Jesus teach us to do when faced with such challenges? (10:38 & 39 give the best answer!)</itunes:summary>
